Captain's
Corner is a quick read that will give
you a few tips, strategies and ideas for leading
your team to a season of significance.
Preseason Preparations In chapter 6 of my new book,"Playing
Beyond the
Scoreboard a Team Captain’s Guide to a Season of Significance",
I outlined five preseason questionnaires a captain should complete
before the season begins.
This article will cover the captain to coach survey. Before the
season begins, it is vital to have a discussion with your coach(s)
regarding your role as a team captain. Not finding the time to have
this conversation will prove to be a major mistake as the season
progresses. The conversation will give you a better idea as to what
the coaching staff is expecting you to do this season. Writing the
answers down
in a journal/planner will help when you are confused or frustrated.
Question # 1 “What do you expect from me
personally this season?” Unclear expectations will lead to
frustration. Try to get a clear vision of what your coach wants
you to do.
Question #2 “If you were to write a job description
for me this season, what would it look like?” Try to cover
your job description during practice and game situations.
Question # 3 “How can I help you this season?”
This question may surprise your coach. It will also provide some
powerful insight.
Question # 4 “What’s the process to
address problems or concerns this season?” If you see a problem
arising on the team, what approach should you take in order to address
it? Every coach has their own system to address problems or
concerns. The key is to define the process.
Question # 5 “ What do I need to understand
that I may not right now?”Chances are your coach has seen
a few things that have been very inspiring and a few things that
have been disappointing from previous captains. Try to avoid the
pitfalls of poor team captains by learning from their mistakes.
On the other, hand, try to duplicate or improve some of the lessons
from successful team captains. These are five powerful questions
you must ask prior to the season. By taking the time to define your
role, you are destined to have a season of significance.
If you are serious about your role as a team captain and want to
learn more about my new book, just go to the Books
Page. You can print the order form, fax it to my office and
I’ll get the book to you as soon as possible.
Have a question or comment on team leadership? Is your team doing
something inspiring off the “court?” Let me know all
about it. I’ll get back to you within a week. I may even share
it in my captains corner.
